What is Ableism, and Why Does It Matter?

Ableism is defined as discrimination in favour of able-bodied people. Sadly, the term and concept of ableism is mostly unknown and unused, and yet it describes the ‘ism’ faced daily by people with diverse abilities.

Society is becoming more aware of prejudice and are addressing discrimination such as systemic racism and sexism. To create a truly diverse and inclusive workplace that takes discrimination and lack of inclusion seriously, we believe it is vital that we frame awareness and understanding of the experiences of people with varying disabilities in a similar way – around structural ableism and the unconscious bias associated with ableism.
